Research done for BBC Radio states that in 1912 Mr J Muir
of EMI left England to research and discover new types of music.
He went to Sierra-Leone and then Ghana where
he ended up opening a shop. Since that time African music has still
not been
recognised in the west. Bai Bureh promotions is hoping to change that.
Bai Bureh promotions - a company aiming to develop world music. Founder
member Abraham Sankoh worked for BBC Radio Merseyside for three years
as presenter for African Corner and Community Outlook. While working
on the radio he discovered that african artists lack management and
promotion, and the musicians are not recorded to a professional standard.
His plan is to promote and manage African musicians so that they will
be able to make an impact in the west; until recently they only came
to the UKand USA on one-off gigs and are then forgotten about. His plan
is not only to bring them in for one-off shows, but manage them and
develop them for the European and USA market.
